POSITION DESCRIPTION
Position Title: Practice Nurse — After Hours Primary Medical Care Service Project
Classification: Registered Nurse
Hours: Casual/permanent part-time
Location: Townsville
Responsible to: On-Site Practice Manager — After Hours Primary Medical Care Service Project
POSITION OBJECTIVE
To provide nursing services consistent with the scope of practice and standards of practice for registered nurses in Queensland to assist medical practitioners provide health/medical services to clients of the Afterhours+GP Practice.
RESPSONSIBILITIES
- Provide services to clients in a manner, which is consistent with the philosophy of the practice, and ethical and practice standards of the nursing profession
- Undertake professional development/education necessary to ensure continuing competence as a registered nurse and to develop and maintain the scope of practice expected of a registered nurse in the after hours medical practice.
- Ensure nursing practice is consistent with nursing standards such as the national competency standards for registered Nurses, the Code of Ethics for Nurse in Australia and the Queensland Nursing Council, Scope of Nursing Practice Decision Making Framework.
KEY SELECTION CRITERIA
The nurse will demonstrate the following:
- Current licence to practise as a registered nurse in Queensland
- Minimum of two years experience as a registered nurse
- Ability to triage clients, in particular those presenting to the after hours clinic with acute/emergency health problems
- Knowledge to ensure the treatment room and related services meet infection control, occupational health and safety, and best practice standards.
- Experience in treatment room and other nursing services necessary to assist doctors, including initial assessment, or carry out procedures for clients
- Knowledge to carry out the duties necessary to support current standards for immunisation published by National Health and Medical Research Council
- Experience in providing training for support staff as required to ensure high quality health services to clients
- The knowledge to undertake documentation necessary to support the medical practitioner and maintain safe practice standards and to provide support in the management of clinical software
- Ability to provide specialist nursing services such as wound care, asthma education based on best practice guidelines
- Effective communication skills and the ability to work in a team
- Experience in venepuncture and the collection of pathology specimens
- Competence in life support, holds a current senior first aid certificate
DUTIES STATEMENT
The nurse will:
- Triage all patients presenting to AHGP clinic
- Carry out comprehensive health assessments, which may include:
- TPR BP
- Visual acuity, BMI, urine testing
- ECG, pathology test collection
- Perform Treatments requested by a medical practitioner such as
- Wound dressing/management
- Client education
- Administration of medications, including immunisations
- Complete documentation as required and assist the doctor in the use of clinical software
- Maintain the treatment and consultation rooms, replacing soiled linen and restocking clinical supplies
- Stock control of clinical supplies, drug samples and stationery requirements
- Sterilize equipment as required
- Check pathology tests as required, making sure all results are sighted by a doctor
- Liaise with Practice manager or Clinical Director as necessary
- Undertake follow up of patient as necessary
