Child Health is a free community based service provided to families by qualified Queensland Health professionals specialising in child and adolescent health.

Our Mission is to promote and enhance the optimal health and well being of all children, young people, their families and carers within the Townsville Health Service District, through the promotion of positive health practices, therapy and family support, and evidence–based practice.

Infant Management and Parenting Skills Centre (IMPS)

  • Day Stay by appointment

Assist and support parents and carers with

  • Sleep and settling issues.
  • Feeding issues of babies and young children.
  • Support families developing possible child care routines to help the child settle at home.

Children’s Community Therapy Service (CCTS)

  • Our team provides therapy and social work support for children up to 18 years of age with physical disability and/or special learning needs.

School Based Youth Health

  • Nurses are based in selected high schools providing support and education on health matters for young people.

The following sessions are offered, bookings are essential:


Baby’s First Visit

  • Developmental assessments as per the National Health & Medical Research Council Guidelines.
  • Discussion on care of infant & normal behaviour.
  • Meet other parents.
  • Baby massage.

Sleep and Settling

(6—18 months & 18 months +)

  • Are you having difficulties in getting (or keeping) your baby asleep? Come along and learn some strategies to help the whole family.
  • We are unable to cater for children at these sessions.

Infant Nutrition and Oral Health

  • We cover all you ever wanted to know about feeding your child – from starting out to "fussy" eating. Come along and listen to our guest speaker from Oral Health talk about teething and tooth care.

Development and Play

(3—9 months & 9—18 months)

  • Do you need a developmental check for your baby/toddler?
  • Would you like to learn how to encourage your child’s development?
  • Come and find out how.

Safety

  • Did you know that 67% of all childhood accidents occur in the home?

Immunisation and Managing Illness

  • Answers to any questions you may have about your child’s immunisation and the changes to the schedule.
  • We also look at common childhood illnesses, what to do, when to seek help.

Community Group Presentations

  • Life in the tropics – what does Townsville have to offer you and your family?

Breast Feeding Consultation

  • Conducted by a Lactation Consultant.
  • By appointment.

Individual Consultations

  • Offered to parents on an appointment basis.
  • Information seeking & anticipatory guidance.

Parenting Programs

  • A variety of parenting programs that provide information, support and practical answers to everyday parenting concerns.
  • These include Triple P, sleep programs, Family Care.
  • Choices exist to cater for individual needs.

Young Parents’ Program

(participants 15 — 25 years)

  • Preparation for Parenthood group.
  • Parents’ and Babies’ group.
  • Birth to 6 months old.

Immunisation

  • Immunisation is available free for children 0 – 18 years, as per the National Health and Medical Research Council schedule.

Hearing tests

  • Hearing tests offered to children 4—18 years of age.
  • Conducted at Kirwan Campus by appointment with Child and Family Health Nurse.

Weight Only Program

  • Parents/Caregivers are encouraged to utilise baby scales in the centres.

Early Intervention Specialists

  • The Early Intervention Specialist (EIS) focus is on increasing the support for vulnerable families through the provision of early intervention and parenting initiatives to children and their families from 0 – 18 years.

Realistic Motherhood Group

  • The aim of this group is to help mothers to understand the adjustment to motherhood. Topics discussed include expectations, relaxation, assertiveness and self–esteem.
