TGPN — Practice ProfileQuacks at Bamford Lane
Background & History:The practice has been established for over 25 years, is situated in a building with another general practice and works co-operatively with that practice, sharing some major equipment items (e.g. sterilizers etc), but running with different reception desks, staff etc. Neither practice has ever bulk-billed. The practice has been computerized for receipting and accounting purposes for nearly 20 years. Prescription writing has been computerized for 6 years and we have had all on-going clinical records on computer for over 3 years now. Letters received from other health providers are scanned into the records. We do, however, have a large number of old handwritten records available for reference. We have been a training practice for the RACGP for 19 years and are accredited for both basic and advanced terms as well as for mentor terms. We also host work experience students and post-graduate medical students from the University of Queensland as well as our own "home grown" medical students from the new undergraduate medical school at James Cook University. We have a web site at www.quacks.com.au and also have a second monthly newsletter with general medical information as well as specific practice news. Many of our patients have attended since the early days of the practice. Over the years we have delivered many of their children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. We estimate we now have 5 or 6 "five generation families" who attend. We also have a dedicated and comfortable staff tea room. We are GPA Plus Accredited. Re-accreditation will be due in October 2003. Practice Aims & Philosophy:The basic philosophy of the practice is to provide the best quality health care possible in a friendly environment. We have never bulk-billed as we feel strongly that this might compromise our ability to provide this care. Fees are discounted where appropriate at the discretion of the doctors. We believe that patients should be encouraged to take responsibility for their own health as much as possible. We carry out palliative care for patients of the practice and also have admission privileges at both of the local private hospitals as well as providing on-going medical supervision for patients who are residents of the nursing homes in our area. After Hours care is currently provided through the After Hours General Practice, which is co-ordinated by the Townsville General Practice Network. After hours consultations and nursing support are available until 10pm each night, from midday on Saturday and all day on Sunday and public holidays. After 10pm a GP is "on call" — patient calls are screened by arrangement with our local ambulance service.
