Practice Aims & Philosophy

We strive to provide a high standard of health care to our community by implementing strategies which contribute to a health and independent lifestyle.

UniHealth Medical Centre is a purpose built facility servicing the needs of students of James Cook University and the community of Townsville. The Medical Centre is located just off the University campus next to The Townsville Hospital in the suburb of Douglas. The practice has been operating since September 2002.

The practice is governed by a Board of Directors and managed by a team comprising Janine Carrucan — Practice Manager, Drs Peta-Ann Teague and Gill Warren — Team Leaders. We are open Monday – Friday 8am – 5pm, no weekends or public holidays.

The After Hours GP service use our facilities after hours and registrars are welcome to provide this additional service.

Our medical staff consists of the following doctors:

We have 7 consulting rooms primarily used by GPs however our service providers also include psychologists, dietitians and a child & adolescent psychiatrist. This blending of skills enables our GPs to utilise allied health and specialists in a more effective way with great benefits to our patients. The practice is fully computerised and the practitioners use Medical Director for clinical records and the administration staff use IBA Plexus for practice management and appointments.

We have 2 registered nurses covering the 5 days we are open. Our capable nurses immunise, set up for minor procedures, perform audiometry, spirometry and ECG recordings, sterilise instruments on site and also participate in healthy weight clinic and mental health integrated case conferencing.

The equipment at UniHealth is modern and functional and includes: ECG machine, spirometer, audiometer, foetal Doppler, dermatoscope, auriscope/otoscope is standard in all rooms as is BP machine. We have a dedicated vaccine refrigerator and we offer a high standard travel medicine service as well as Yellow Fever.

The appointments and reception area is coordinated by our 4 fantastic receptionists who aim to make your day as stress free as possible. We offer direct Medicare billing for students of JCU, holders of healthcare cards, pension cards, Veterans and children under 18. All others are privately billed.

Most of our GPs also participate in the School of Medicine activities including lecturing and home group tutoring and this close association with School of Medicine is highly valuable. The practice is a fully accredited teaching practice with School of Medicine, accredited for supervisors with RACGP and has also been accredited by AGPAL.
